Resort real estate in Carefree Arizona all began in the 1950s. That is when two friends on a whim conceived of a master planned community north of Scottsdale real estate in Maricopa County Arizona. Today, exclusive resort real estate north of Scottsdale in Carefree retains a western cowboy character. Downtown offers fun shopping and dining destinations at The Spanish Village and El Pedregal at Carefree.
The Town of Carefree lies at an elevation of 2,500 feet, a thousand feet higher than Scottsdale homes and several degrees cooler than Phoenix real estate. With approximately 4000 residents, Carefree AZ homes enjoy large home sites surrounded by towering Saguaro cactus, giant ocotillo, prickly pear cactus, and hearty wildflowers and championship golf courses. Exclusive developments such as Winfield, Legend Trail, and Desert Forest join the famous Carefree Resort & Villas in the magnificent Sonoran Desert landscape.
Carefree real estate is definitely away from it all except for nature, scenic mountain vistas, and an abundance of wildlife. Located west of the resort, Black Mountain features two different habitats. The massive red boulders on the eastern side contract with the cactus and green colors on the west. To the north are the Continental Mountains and 17 miles to the east is Bartlett Lake in the Tonto National Forest.
Tucked into the foothills of the desert, the legendary Carefree Resort & Villas lures guests from Scottsdale with its hallmark features: the Spa at Carefree, botanical gardens, Desert Glasshopper Studio, The Red Horse Saloon, Roadrunner Cafe, a Rees Jones-designed 18-hole championship golf course, tennis club, desert cruises, horseback riding, jeep tours, nature walks, hikes, gift shop, and museum trips. Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, and Dick Van Dyke frequented the Carefree Inn in the 1960s.
Carefree Development Corporation emerged after the founders bought a goat ranch for $44,000 and acquired 2,000 acres nearby. K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington, with cavalier abandon, creatively named the streets in their new community Tranquil Trail, Easy street, and Ho and Hum Roads. The motto of Carefree is "Home of Cowboys and Caviar, Where the Old West Meets the New." In 1959, the entrepreneurs enlisted the help of an architect and solar engineer to design the sundial circle plaza. The sundial points to the North Star and is the third largest in the western hemisphere.
